Class 12 – Chapter 03 : Matchbox

Matchbox

-Ashapurna Debi

Detailed Summary

In this powerful short story, the author Ashapurna Debi compares women to matchboxes. Like matchboxes, women are full of fire and energy, but they are expected to remain quiet and contained. The story focuses on Nomita, a housewife in a large joint family, and her strained relationship with her husband Ajit.

One morning, Nomita finds a letter from her mother in Ajit’s clothes. She realizes that Ajit had opened her letter without her knowledge and kept it hidden for three days. This was not the first time—it had become a regular practice. Ajit would read all her letters first, especially those from her mother, and sometimes would not even give them to her. Nomita suspects he has been doing this for a long time.

The letter contains a usual request from her poor mother asking for help. But Ajit mocks it, saying he will just send money instead of reading such letters. Nomita feels insulted and angry—not only by his behaviour but also by her mother’s repeated pleas. Her self-respect is hurt.

This time, Nomita flares up in anger, grabs a matchbox, and sets fire to her sari to express her suppressed rage. Ajit quickly puts it out and is shocked. He tries to dismiss her anger by joking, but Nomita stays firm. She then calmly carries on with household duties, hiding her pain and continuing to care for the family.

The story ends with the author reinforcing the comparison between women and matchboxes—full of explosive power, but rarely used. Men take advantage of this, knowing that women will rarely rebel.
