The Seedling
–Paul Laurence Dunbar
Detailed Summary
“The Seedling” is a motivational and symbolic poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar. It tells the story of a small seedling lying in the darkness of the soil, unsure of its strength but willing to try. The seedling speaks to itself with hope, saying: “I am not very strong, but I’ll do the best I can.” From that moment, it begins its life’s journey.
Slowly, it pushes a little leaflet into the light. The leaflet calls for its brother, the stem, and more leaves follow. Although the journey is difficult — filled with sweat and effort — the seedling eventually becomes a plant, and finally a beautiful flower.
The poem compares this growth to a child’s life. Just like the seedling, children should also strive to do their best in life, despite difficulties. With help from the “sun and showers” — a symbol of nature’s support — children can overcome struggles and grow into strong, virtuous human beings.
