Class 11 – Chapter 05 : And Then Gandhi Came

And Then Gandhi Came

  • Jawaharlal Nehru

 Detailed Summary

The essay describes the dark and painful condition of India after World War I. The war ended, but instead of peace, India received repression, unemployment, and widespread fear. The people were deeply humiliated and helpless. There was no hope either from the past or the present. India was like a nation trapped in a vicious circle of poverty, fear, and suffering.

At this hopeless time, Mahatma Gandhi appeared on the national stage. His arrival brought a great change. Nehru describes him as a beam of light, a whirlwind, and a fresh breath of air that awakened the Indian people. Gandhi came from among the common people and spoke their language. He gave them confidence, truth, and the courage to resist fear.

His core message was fearlessness and truth, and he inspired action based on these principles. Gandhi attacked the root causes of British rule — fear, respect for titles, and blind cooperation. He encouraged people to reject British honours and awaken national pride.

Gandhi also made people aware of their social problems, like untouchability, inequality, and lack of unity. He wanted an India where the poorest feel it is their country, where there is no high or low class, and where all communities live in harmony.

His impact was both political and psychological. He gave people back their confidence and changed their attitude toward themselves and their future. Even those who did not agree with him felt his power and influence.
