Class 12 – Chapter 07 : The Hour Of Truth

The Hour of Truth

Percival Wilde

Detailed Summary

The Hour of Truth is a one-act play that takes place in the living room of Robert Baldwin, a loyal and honest bank employee. His employer, Mr. Gresham, has been arrested for committing fraud at the bank. Baldwin’s family — his wife Martha, son John, and daughter Evie — are worried about how this will affect them, as Baldwin is closely connected to Gresham and may be called as a witness in court.

While waiting for Baldwin to return from a visit to Gresham, the family discusses the situation. They admire Baldwin’s honesty, but they also feel he has been underpaid and taken for granted all these years. There’s tension in the house as they guess what Gresham might ask Baldwin to do. When Baldwin arrives, he reveals that Gresham offered him a bribe of one hundred thousand dollars to keep quiet during the trial. Shockingly, instead of being angry, his family members urge him to accept the money, saying it is only fair after all his loyal service.

Baldwin is deeply disappointed by their reaction. He tells them that no amount of money can buy his honesty. He believes that telling the truth is more important than living in comfort gained through lies. He refuses the bribe and decides to testify truthfully, even though it could lead to difficulties.

Just then, Mr. Marshall, a representative from another bank, arrives and brings unexpected news. Gresham has confessed to the crime after seeing Baldwin’s refusal to lie. Mr. Marshall praises Baldwin’s integrity and offers him a better job at his bank. The play ends with Baldwin being rewarded for standing by his principles, and his family realising the true value of honesty.
