Class 12 – Chapter 09 : Didi

Didi

-Shaheen Mistri

Summary

This is the inspiring real-life story of Shaheen Mistri, an Indian education reformer and the founder of the Akanksha Foundation and Teach for India.

Shaheen grew up in many countries, living a privileged life due to her father’s job. However, during visits to orphanages in Jakarta and blind schools in Mumbai, she witnessed the pain and inequality many children faced. These visits made her realise the deep inequities in society.

At 18, she returned to India and got admission to St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai. While exploring the slums, she met Sandhya, a girl her age, and their friendship started Shaheen’s journey as a teacher. Soon, more children joined, and she began informal classes inside Sandhya’s small home.

Facing rejection from many schools, Shaheen finally started Akanksha in a small classroom offered by Holy Name School. It began with 15 students and grew into 58 centres and 6 schools. Her work helped thousands of children access education, dignity, and opportunities, breaking the cycle of poverty.
