Class 10 – Chapter 05 : A Phoenix Rises

A Phoenix Rises

Twinkle Khanna

 Detailed Summary

A Phoenix Rises is a powerful and moving story based on the real-life struggles and achievements of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a poor school dropout from rural Tamil Nadu who became a pioneer in menstrual hygiene.

The story is told through the fictional character Bablu, who mirrors Arunachalam’s life. Bablu loses his father in an accident when he is very young. As the only male in a household of women, he leaves school early to support his family. He works as a welder and later marries a woman named Gowri.

One day, he sees Gowri hiding her cloth from public view. He realises that she uses dirty rags during menstruation because commercial sanitary pads are too expensive. This deeply disturbs Bablu. When he goes to buy a pad from a medical store, he is shocked to learn how costly it is. He finds out that if his wife bought them regularly, they would have to cut down on other basics like milk or ghee.

Determined to help, Bablu starts experimenting with making low-cost sanitary pads. He buys cotton and cloth, stitches them himself, and gives them to his wife and sister to test. But they say it doesn’t work well.

His repeated experiments draw suspicion from villagers. Rumours spread that he’s gone mad or become perverted. His family becomes ashamed. Even his mother and wife leave him. He becomes an outcast in the village, mocked by all.

Still, Bablu doesn’t give up. He tries testing the pads himself using animal blood and even builds a testing machine. Finally, he discovers the real material used in commercial pads — pinewood pulp. He manages to create a simple, low-cost sanitary napkin-making machine that can be used even in villages.

His invention not only solves the menstrual hygiene problem, but it also creates employment for rural women. The story ends with Bablu standing alone but proud, having chosen to stand for what is right even when the whole world stood against him.
