Class 09 – Chapter 08 : The Saga of the Tiffin Carriers

The Saga of the Tiffin Carriers

Hugh and Colleen Gantzer

 Detailed Summary:

This chapter highlights the amazing story of the dabbawalas of Mumbai, who deliver thousands of lunchboxes every day across the city with incredible accuracy and speed. The system began in 1890 when a woman asked someone to deliver lunch to her husband at work. That small act started what became one of the world’s most efficient food delivery systems.

The dabbawalas collect food from people’s homes in the morning, sort them by destination using an alpha-numeric code, and deliver them across Mumbai — through trains, carts, and even cycles. Despite handling about 2,00,000 lunchboxes daily, they rarely make a mistake.

Even Prince Charles of England visited them, and top business schools like Harvard have studied their methods. Their success lies in their discipline, teamwork, training, and dedication, not in using any modern technology. They also follow a strict code: no late pick-ups, and no second chances for delays.
