Class 08 – Chapter 07 : Engine Trouble – Notes

Engine Trouble

R.K. Narayan

 Detailed Summary:

Engine Trouble is a humorous short story written by R.K. Narayan, set in the fictional town of Malgudi. The narrator unexpectedly wins a road engine in a lottery at a travelling fair called Gaiety Land. While this seems like a lucky win, it turns into a disaster.

The narrator soon finds himself unable to move or sell the engine. He tries several ways to get rid of it — contacting the showman, the municipality, and even asking the Municipal Chairman to buy it. All efforts fail. Eventually, with the help of a dismissed bus driver named Joseph, fifty coolies, and a temple elephant, he tries to transport the engine to a nearby field. But chaos breaks out when the elephant panics, the engine crashes into a wall, and the narrator is arrested.

After multiple problems and expenses, including paying fines, wages, repair costs, and rent, the narrator is at his wit’s end. However, Nature comes to his rescue. A mild earthquake throws the engine into a disused well. The owner of the property, happy that the well is covered, pays all the narrator’s debts and even offers money (which he refuses). The story ends with relief and irony.

Let’s Rewind – Textbook Question Answers

  1. What would you do if you won a road engine in a lottery?
→ I would try to sell it to the government or a construction company that can use it. If not, I would donate it to a museum or exhibition.
  2. Why did people gaze at the narrator as if he were a strange animal?
→ Because he won a useless and massive road engine in a lottery, which was an odd and unexpected prize.
  3. How do characters like Joseph, the temple elephant, and the coolies add to the humour?
→ They are all part of an exaggerated and absurd attempt to move the engine. Their failure and confusion add to the comic tone.
  4. How does the narrator’s enthusiasm change over time?
→ At first, he is excited and proud. Later, his enthusiasm fades as he faces many troubles, and he becomes desperate and frustrated.
  5. Do you think machines like the road engine have become outdated? Why/Why not?
→ Yes, because modern machines are more efficient, compact, and easy to use. Old machines like the road engine are difficult to maintain and transport.

 Let’s Recall and Recreate

 Activity 1: Humorous Instruction Manual

Instruction Manual: How to Use a Mobile Phone (Humorous Version)

Step 1 – Starting the Phone

  1. Locate the power button — often found where your thumb isn’t.
  2. Hold it for 2 seconds — or 10, depending on the mood of your phone.

Step 2 – Using the Phone
3. Unlock the screen — with face, fingerprint, or a password you always forget.
4. Find an app — tap everywhere until something opens.
5. Call someone — unless your battery dies or signal disappears.

Troubleshooting
6. No signal? Raise your hand and rotate like a windmill.
7. Phone frozen? Threaten to throw it. That usually works.
8. Apps not opening? Blame the internet.

Maintenance Tips
9. Charge regularly — or just carry a power bank like a second heart.
10. Don’t drop it — unless it has a cover made of adamantium.
11. Don’t use it while cooking — your phone doesn’t like oil.

 Activity 2: News Article

Headline: Road Engine Causes Chaos in Malgudi!

MALGUDI, Sunday:
A strange incident unfolded yesterday when a man tried to move a giant road engine he had won in a lottery. The engine was dragged out of the Gymkhana Grounds by a temple elephant, steered by an untrained driver, and pushed by fifty coolies.

As expected, the engine wobbled, zigzagged, and finally crashed into a compound wall, causing damage and panic. The crowd scattered. The elephant snapped its ropes and trampled the wall further. The owner of the wall slapped the narrator. Police arrived and arrested him.

The man, now out on bail, faces several fines and bills. “It was the worst prize ever,” he said. “I only wanted to win a sewing machine!”

Let’s Perform – Activity 1: Analysis of AI Article by Yuval Noah Harari

A. Let’s Analyse the Passage

  1. How do you think technology is going to change the world?
→ Technology is going to make life easier and faster. It will improve communication, health care, education, and daily routines. However, it also has risks like job loss and emotional manipulation through AI.
  2. Will computers develop feelings? Why/Why not?
→ No, computers will not develop feelings. They can solve problems and make decisions using data, but they do not have consciousness or emotions like humans.
  3. How is AI used to manipulate people’s emotions?
→ AI collects data from social media and suggests products or opinions based on people’s interests. This can influence how people vote, what they buy, or what they believe, without them realizing it.
  4. Are we relying too much on technology? Why?
→ Yes, because people use technology for almost everything — communication, learning, shopping, entertainment, and work. This can reduce real human interaction and independent thinking.
  5. How can we retain our humanity in this era of evolving technology?
→ We should use technology wisely, maintain human values like kindness and empathy, and make sure technology supports life instead of controlling it.

B. Debate: “Use of Technology – A Boon or a Bane?”

Prepare two groups for a classroom debate. Below is a completed list of points:

Group A – Boon (Benefits of Technology)

Example Debate Opening Line:

 Let’s Perform – Activity 2: Script Writing & Enactment

Scene: Narrator tries to convince the Municipal Chairman

Title: “Please Buy My Road Engine!” – A Skit

Characters:

  • Narrator
  • Municipal Chairman
  • Peon

Narrator: (Enters nervously) Good morning, sir. May I have a moment of your time?

Chairman: Come in. What brings you here?

Narrator: Sir, I recently won a… road engine in a lottery.

Chairman: (Surprised) A road engine? That’s quite unusual.

Narrator: Yes sir. I thought maybe the municipality could make use of it. I’m ready to give it at a very low price.

Chairman: (Raises eyebrow) A second-hand road engine? What will we do with that? Our roads are dug, not rolled.

Narrator: But sir, it is in excellent condition! Brass shining, wheels strong—very majestic!

Chairman: (Laughs) We already have one, and maintaining even that is costly. I’m sorry. Not interested.

Narrator: (Pleading) Please sir, I’ve been paying rent to keep it at the Gymkhana ground. My wife is worried and I’m out of money.

Chairman: I feel sorry for you, but the answer is no. Maybe you can donate it to a museum.

Narrator: (Dejectedly) Thank you for your time, sir.

Chairman: Good luck with your engine!

(Narrator exits, disappointed)
