It all started when Muruganantham noticed his wife using dirty cloths during her periods because they could not afford sanitary napkins. Shocked and concerned, he decided to find a better solution. But when he tried to make pads himself, he faced strong criticism and even social rejection from his family and village.
Instead of giving up, Muruganantham continued his research and experiments. He found out that companies were selling pads at high prices using machines worth crores of rupees. So he decided to invent a cheap, simple machine that rural women could use to make pads. This machine not only improved hygiene but also gave employment and dignity to thousands of women.
He travelled across India, often living with poor families, to understand their needs. His machine was small, affordable, and easy to operate. He even refused to sell it to big companies and preferred giving it to self-help groups and rural women entrepreneurs.
His efforts led to a revolution in menstrual health awareness, especially in villages, and he was listed among TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the world.
